JHU ICMIC Career Development Components
Director: Peter Barker, D.Phil.
The vision of the JHU ICMIC Career Development Director for this component is to nurture a select group of scientists to provide academic scientific leadership in molecular imaging of cancer in the 21st century. The Career Developmental Component of the JHU ICMIC Program has been successful on several fronts. All three of our previous awardees have successfully established independent research careers in molecular imaging of cancer through this component. The achievements of these awardees are summarized the following section. Our interactions with Dr. Paul Wang of Howard University through the Career Development Component led to the funding of two partnership training grants. These achievements are also summarized in a subsequent section.

Dr. Dean Wong provides guidance to the director and faculty of the program. As Radiology Vice Chair for Research, Administration and Training, Dr. Wong’s departmental responsibility is to assist both, basic scientists and physicians in developing and maintaining both research funding and an academic path that has research as a major component.
2. Overview and Training Objectives
·
Course Work
Although courses are elective for both Ph.D. and M.D. trainees, each participant
in the CDA program is strongly encouraged to take courses relevant to their
research interests and/or in areas in which individual backgrounds may be
lacking. These courses are chosen following discussion with the awardees’
faculty sponsor and mentor. These courses are offered by world-class
faculty in the various “schools” of JHU ranging from the Whiting School of
Engineering to the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.
Course content ranges from “cellular engineering” to “wavelet analysis”. Click here for the course

3. Career developmental awards (CDAs) Awardees
· Dr. Kristine Glunde: This CDA was awarded for two years to investigate the role of the tumor microenvironment in lysosomal trafficking-mediated breast cancer invasion and metastasis. Dr. Glunde was funded by an R21 in July 1, 2005 to further evaluate the role of lysosomal trafficking in breast cancer metastasis and invasion using optical imaging...........read more
· Dr. Michael Jacobs: This CDA was awarded to pursue clinical MR studies with multi-parametric image analyses to detect and monitor breast cancer response to therapy. Dr. Jacobs obtained an R01 as well as additional funding to establish this area of research...........read more
· Dr. Arvind P. Pathak: This CDA was awarded for two years to develop MR molecular imaging of tumor angiogenesis. Dr. Pathak obtained an R21 in 2008 to continue and further develop these strategies...........read more
